In which I reach the end of my sunglasses search

Firstly, a big thank you to Misslikey for the shout-out on her blog. The feeling is mutual, of course. In fact, check out her latest post, which has some super duper street style pics.
Next, I wanted to post an update about my sunglasses search, since quite a few of my friends have been helping out: Anatole suggested I try Persol, which is maybe my favourite glasses brand, but actually the frames I looked at there weren't quite round enough. Roz mentioned how the Oliver Peoples O'Malley style I'm after, but can't get hold of, is similar to the Riley frames, also by OP. Kari Alder, the Los Angeles-based Oliver Peoples PR has also been really helpful, even going to the trouble of talking to Garrett Leight, son of OP founder Larry Leight. She had this to say: "[Garrett] has recently opened his own boutique and his inventory currently includes a small number of original O'Malley frames... he will ship internationally." Finally, yesterday I flipped open the April issue of British Vogue (worth buying for the Lara Stone shoot. And why isn't she on the cover?), and they show a pair of sunglasses I had totally forgotten about by Cutler & Gross. They are the perfect shape, and tortoiseshell (Sienna Miller wore a beige pair to the premiere of The September Issue in NYC last year). So there you go! In which I hear back about the Oliver Peoples sunglasses

The kindly PR from Oliver Peoples got back to me yesterday following my query about the O'Malley sunglasses I saw featured in Interview magazine. It's not good news, people (Peoples. ha!). This is the gist of it, and I quote from her email:

"In the late 80s and early 90s, the O’Malley optical frame was originally available in 3 sizes: 41, 43 and 45. The two smaller sizes were available with a sun clip and we stopped producing them by 2000. The larger size was still available until a couple of years ago.What has happened now is that Larry Leight (our co-founder and designer) has a small ‘treasure trove’ of original OP frames, a small quantity of which are the two smaller O’Malley sizes. They will be made available to select VIP accounts (yet to be determined) for retail. However, I don’t believe they will include a sun clip or will be available on the website."

Boo shucks. Although she very sweetly offered to find out if any of these elusive frames will be making their way to the UK. I'll keep you posted. In the meantime, does anyone know any other sunglasses brands that stock this shape?

Oliver Peoples O'Malley shades - part deux

The hunt for Oliver Peoples O'Malley sunglasses continues (see previous post). I contacted Oliver Peoples through Twitter, and the guy got back to me saying the O'Malley frames I'm after are "long discontinued". Which is strange, since I'm looking at the February 2010 issue of Interview (p. 41, to be exact), and there's a photo of them, listed thus: "...Oliver Peoples is again selling its rounder, slimmer O'Malley frame from 1987", and refers readers to the Oliver Peoples website. So what's going on? I've emailed the Twitter OP guy; let's see what he comes back with.

Object of desire

Only one style of sunglasses will do for me this spring. Think 1987. Think Bret Easton Ellis. Think Oliver Peoples' newly reissued O'Malley frames. Preferably in tortoiseshell. One of the Olsen girls wears them, I forget which. They look like this:

Incidentally, Guy Trebay was ahead of the curve, and wrote a piece about them in The New York Times last summer. Read it here. I've just emailed the website, oliverpeoples.com, to see where they're stocked in London...

California dreaming
